I don't know colm_mcm if you're still researching these option codes, but I was on a web site called FINDJAPCARS.COM earlier and came across this.

http://www.findjapancars.com/catalog/index.php?page=1&brand=MITSUBISHI&model=FTO

Don't know if it'll be of help but when you click onthe Model Code it gives you info on the Sales Start Year, Optional extras, etc.
eg, my code is HRGH(E) which it says is Sales year 1996.2, but the other decoder said 1995.

Anyway I just compared 2 codes to see what differences there were:

HNGH ---------------------------- HRGH
standard front spoiler-----------not an option
sub driver airbag ----------------optional
ABS--------------------------------optional
1997.2----------------------------1996.2

Might be of some use.

May be able to add a bit of info here (this post was referenced on FTO Aus). Have managed to reverse engineer the option codes out of caps. This is how I was able to build the chassis decoder for Complete FTO (yes, im resposible for it im afraid). Bad news is its for all Mitsubishis, not just FTO's. Hope it helps though....

Well, thats my first post. Should introduce myself in the newbies section I guess.

Where is the chassis number located on the car itself? Underside? Boot? Inside door?

I'm having terrible trouble getting the log book from the previous owner so I've resorted to getting Shannon to do it for me.

In the engine bay, it's stamped on the firewall and there's a steel plate on it too.
