Tappets

Postby soc » Wed Feb 25, 2004 5:10 pm

Am thinking of having a go at replacing the tappets on my GR myself using the guide written by Richard Lister. The problem is I'm not 100% sure what the tappets do and if there is any precise setting of camshaft, etc that needs to be done after the new tappets are fitted. Surely it's not as simple as just swopping old for new?

Cheers

Lads, I assume you're not members of the FTOOC, otherwise you would have seen the process documented in the last edition. I can scan it in if anyone wants it.

I should really join.... I've got a doc from Richard Lister on how he did it.......

Ciaran it would be great if you could scan in the article.

Lads, this might also be of interest to you, it details the cleaning of tappets on a GSR with a 4G93 block (same as the GS):

And another one..

yea I saw these links yesterday - I have to say I am very tempted to have a go at this. Looks like it is a straight forward enough job - pop off the head, pop out the rockers and tappets, clean tappets, cover with new oil, replace, refit head (new gasket??) and away we go.

Do you reckon you need a new head gasket??

Someone told me before to always put on a new head gasket when taking off the head and working on it like that, especially if it hasn't been replaced in a while. I think it can get a little out of shape, so when you try to put it back on you can have problems with it not quite being right (at least thats what the memory dug up and dusted off...).

They're not expensive anyway, so for the sake of it I'd be inclined to replace it.
