Headlight Restoration

Postby Temeeo » Sun Jul 13, 2014 10:41 pm

Decided to do my headlights today. They weren't peeling, they were just a bit weather beaten (starting to look yellow + had some marks on) they were making the car look old.

Here is what I've used:

- Wet & dry sandpaper grit 1500 and 2000
- Rubbing compound
- Meguiar's Plast-RX
- Masking Tape
- Foam applicator and Cloth

The yellow tint, I swear it looked worse than that

First of I washed the lights and masked surrounding area

Image

Then started the wet sanding process, used the "horizontal/vertical" technique with the 1500 grit, then circular motion with the 2000 grit

Image

This is what I ended up with

Then I used the rubbing compound, wasn't sure how much of the stuff to use. Instruction say small amount yet there is a few pictures out there where people use tons

Image

This is what they looked like after about 10 minutes of rubbing

Image

I then applied more rubbing compound and spend another 10 or so minutes on each lamp before I cleaned them and moved onto applying the Plast-RX, I used sponge to apply it and rubbed each light for about 5 minutes

And this is the result after wiping of the residue with micro fibre cloth

I'm really happy with the results! :D

Some tips if you intend to have a go at it:

Asses the headlight first to determine the sand paper grit you'll need (if any). Are the headlight peeling, or are badly scuffed? If so you'll most likely need grit lower than the 1500. If they are just discoloured and/or have minor marks/scratches then all you need is grit 2000 or higher - somebody here told me that, but I wouldn't listen

Use the flat of your fingers when sanding the lights, and keep the surface nice and wet :D

Final observation - the results are in direct proportion of elbow grease that you invest in.

I was going to add the above to the "headlight post" in knowledge base section but wasn't able to add any pictures. :(

Cheers Mick, I'm trying to do every week "a bit of" work on her, I'm worried that either my friends or neighbours will soon call the men in the white coats!

You would have gotten away with the rubbing compound without the sand paper

Looks great though. However, they can turn grubby again pretty quickly. A quick coat of lacquer should help keep them lenses nice and clear.

The Plast-RX contains apart from micro abrasive particles, conditioning oils (for restoring clarity) and "highly water resistant polymers that provide long-lasting durable protection" - taken from the label. Planning on using that on the lamps every month or two as it's really easy to apply, so hopefully they'll stay nice and clear.

As long as you don't mind redoing it every couple of months, it's grand.
