160,000km service / Timing belt question

Postby mcgon1979 » Wed Feb 02, 2011 2:01 pm

Hi all,

I'm going to do the timing belt in the coming weeks on my Gpvr. It was done at 60,000km (without water pump or hydraulic tensioner).
It now has 160,000km. I'm going to get the belt kit with idler bearing, tensioner wheel, and auxilary belts. I'm also going to do the waterpump (yes/no? good bad idea?)
My question is whether I need the hydraulic tensioner. I know they very rarely leak or fail on the FTO. its very pricey too! http://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php?plid=m3b0s9p1070
Anyone changed the belt recently and did you get the hydraulic tensioner too?

Hi

I done mine last November, i found it to be a tricky enough job, im only an amateur though.
My car had only 90k kms on it at the time so i didnt replace the tensioner, but i did do the waterpump.
Bit on extra work doing the pump but for peace of mind and while ur at it, i think its a must to replace it.
I also replaced the idler and tensioner wheels.
As this is your second timing belt replacement and your car has 160k kms on it i would be inclined to replace the tensioner also.

I'm not familiar with this part? There is the hyraulic tensioner which you refer to seperately and what appears to be an idler wheel (which always appears seems to be referred to as a tensioner), what is the idler bearing?

At 160km I'd definitely be getting the water pump changed. At a little over €100 I'd probably throw in the hydraulic tensioner too....

bought the lot... over 300 euros worth. Will do it next weekend or the weekend after.
Car is immaculate and serviced regularly by me, so no point letting up on keeping it that way. Did plugs (ik22 all round) and fuel filter a few months ago too.
its all money, but I do love that car :)
