Time to spill the beans

Postby Dragonheart » Thu Jul 23, 2009 8:04 am

So I finally purchased 2 weeks ago, she's not an FTO I'm afraid, as they are pretty pricey for the condition some of them are in over here, and with what I paid for this, it was a steal. Yes it needs a bit of work to bring her back to the proper standard she was once in, and a service is the first thing it'll get. But the interior and the bay seem pretty much up to scratch, a few minor details regarding the cosmetic side externally which I'll get around to doing in time. She cost me the equivalent of €1,250, and for a car I regard as one of the icons of the '90's shes was worth it.
True, its non-turbo and auto, but for just driving around it'll do me perfect.
So, here it is, she says this on the front;

Has one of these in the bay;

And looks something like this from the back;

And from other angles;

As you can see, there is some details to be addressed, like the front splitter, rear bumper is scratched, but most is simple to do. Some of the pics were before I washed her and it came out pretty good after, I thought there might be some hidden sun fade but the only place is on the targas. Cant believe how easy they come off, one clip and its done. Its sounds beautiful, its pure stock so the noise is solid 3L V6. I will say this, I reckon the FTO would hammer it in a quarter mile, the non-turbos only have 222hp, and feel massively heavy when driving. The RWD is....interesting..., especially on the mountain roads which have vertical drops, no barriers, and about an inch of grit on the roads to stop the ice settling. Scary drive that night! I was looking for a TT and had one offered to me for €2,000, but I missed out, a fella 3 doors down bought it instead, what are the odds! Another thing that I find interesting is the location of the seat belt, its attched to the B pillar, which is part of the door, so when you open the door, the b pillar and seat belt go with it. The arrangement of the light stalks is class thoggh, they're not stalks, they're pods by the steering wheel. She also has cruise control, something called an overdrive feature, which is a button on the gear stick, and another button that switches from power to auto to hold. Dont ask me about them cause I odnt know.
Anyway, there she is, my latest addition. But in time I'll be adding another FTO to that, cause I still think that even though the Z is a legend, the FTO is much nicer to drive, more responsive, gear box is better, and the fact I know about them a lot more than the Z helps a lot.

Thanks lads. She will be better looking hopefully when i get a chance to do the little bits to her. Easy to get parts as there are a lot of them for breaking on the version of ebay over here, trademe, so thats a plus.
Oh and thanks to Tom and Bernard too for keeping quiet, they saw it after I got it so knew about it. Grace doesnt know yet and I'm picking her up in a few hours from the airport so I couldnt say anything as its meant to be a surprise as she thinks I'm coming in a taxi. :D

Well wear MJ, no turbo means less potential problems but also less fun ;)

How does the cost of motoring in NZ compare to back home?

Looks like a NZ car as opposed to Jap import ? Just as well - if you had the Japanese version, it would have Nissan 'Fairlady' emblazoned all over it :wink:

Does it say fairladyZ over the left light cluster?
Does that make it a jap, or am i wrong (dont know alot about these cars import wise)

Well wear M i always liked the look of these, such great road presence, you really notice one of these pulling up beside you.
I'd rather be hated for what I am,
than loved for what Im not.

Its a Jap version all right, has the Fairlady Z written on the back and the front Nissan badge is replaced with the 'Z' sign, also all the Jap writing inside sort of gives it away!
Cj, I haven't really got a chance to gauge the cost of motoring yet as a whole as I haven't really used it much so far, but petrol is the equivalent of 80C for 95ron, the 99ron is slightly more expensive all right. The cars themselves are cheap in general, some are crazy for the condition they are in though. Parts are easy to come by as there are plenty of breakers over here and fellas always breaking performance cars. From talking to others the cost of service parts such as oil, filters, etc, can be got at a motorfactors called Repco or supercheapautos which are the main ones around, which do deals all the time, currently Repco are selling 5L of Repco 10W40 with an oil filter for 20euro, not bad.
5L of Castrol 10W40 costs around 30euro in a garage, and that's about all I've gotten around to checking so far.
Gary no medallion no I'm afraid, but I might buy one for when the roof comes off. Going to grow a tasche too. :)
Bernard, I'm going to resist, I'm not going to give in.....not this time...... or else I might get pouty and decide to leave the site cause you're picking on me. :D

Ya but maybe I'll start making one out of bean cans and install it at 149psi!! So what will you say then Bernard!!??

Johntony: Tax is less than €150 a year, it goes by being a private cat not the engine size. Insurance isnt compulsory, so if I feel like it its nothing, the WOF (NCT) has to be done every 6 months but is very leniant compared to back home.
Gary: She loved it, I told I had bought a piece of crap '90 car, and as we walked to the car there was a wrecked yoke parked next around it so she thoguht it was that! Luckily the Z came into view soon enough after!

Diff as in drift? Havent tried it, but when I took off from one of the gravel car parks in the country side one weekend the back did swing out very easily, purely unintentional though. The back wheels get 3L of power and the engine is in the front so should be handy enough with drifting, in the manual versions anyway, dont know would the auto play a major part though in preventing a good slide.
