(Wanted) GPX Air Intake Control Sensor

Postby Kace » Fri May 20, 2016 10:32 am

Hi all,

Has anyone got a donor car with a GPX engine in it ? I am looking for the following part (see picture - top left of engine manifold) - it is a tiny screw in sensor - AIr Intake Control Sensor. I expect that it is the cause of my recent emission failure and it is showing a fault on the blink test.

Cheers

Excellent. Thanks for that - great service indeed! Let me check it out tomorrow and confirm that there actually is an issue with the sensor - I need to disconnect the battery and re-do th blink test.

Yeah no problem. If you want to tip down that far you can have it free, it's 100% so least you'll know it's done. . Can fit it for you no problem, but it's super easy so prob no need .

OK so the fault code has cleared just by disconnecting the battery! I am going to drive it for a day or so and see if it re-appears.

If I then pass the NCT without making a change I will be amazed. Will keep you posted.

OK big up to mivecrx for sorting me out with a new sensor! I installed in a jiffy, booked myself in for a Sunday morning retest and emerged triumphant with a gleaming new NCT Cert !!!

Now off to get the decat re-installed and to enjoy the rest of the summer !!

Oh - how does everyone like my new GPvR spoiler - freshly painted by George down at GVD-Autos ! 8)

Looking Great with the gpvr spoiler and the tinted lights look super. Congrats on the NCT. It's almost as stressful as waiting on the missus to give birth as to when they are testing the emissions on an fto

You said it - certainly a strange feeling in that waiting room looking in.

Looks like the last decent Mivec inducing tunnel run ever will be held this summer :-(

Bloody hell. Same situation again this year - passed everything swimmingly and failed miserably on emissions.....every year it seems to be emissions for a different reason - now I don't even know what to try.

This time I did a car reboot / reset and gave a good run before the test, but the CO2 was massively over the limit, Lambda was slightly out. I need to check the blink test again tonight, as I think the air intake control sensor fault comes back after a while, even after I replaced the part last year.

Annoying to say the least.... :smt004

Looks like I may have to try a few things in order to sort. How much do people pay mechanics to check the emissions (multiple times) ? Probably about €40 a pop is it ?

What a pain in the cojones. Sounds like a drop of dipetane wouldn't have pushed it into line either. I had emissions tested a couple of times before the NCT and never found it useful. It could pass in the garage and fail the next day at the nct centre. 9 times out of 10, it's the lambda sensor causing the problem. I am so glad I don't have that worry every year anymore. My new car won't have an emissions test :)

Hi Kace,

I had the same problem regarding emissions each year.
Air intake sensor after blink test, replaced this then passed.
Next year failed miserably.
I replaced lambda, no good.
Then replaced engine coolant temp sensor (ect) and passed test.

Gerry I think you're spot on - it's always one or more of these. The Engine Coolant sensor is the only one I didn't replace yet.
Annoying that I had a new one of these some years back and passed it on to another member.

OK so that's what I need to go for next - anyone got one handy?

I don't have a known good one that I could rely on.
Probably better off getting a new one just to
Give it every chance of passing.

Yes I took a look alright - they seem to be common enough across a number of vehicles according to eBay. I'll pick one up there and see how we go.
IIRC this one is tricky enough to get out as it is close to some of the rubber pipework - am I right here ?

I replaced the Engine Coolant Temperature sensor. It may only have required a clean as it was covered in gunk, but I replaced it anyway with a shiny one from Micksgarage (<€10). It's definitely worth replacing this item given its low cost and ease of replacement. Some care is required when taking out the old one as it is very near a rubber coolant hose that you can puncture with the 19 spanner. There is a small bolt behind the sensor that is used as a support for another pipe. I removed this and it then gives room to get in there and remove the sensor without damaging anything.

Coolant also comes out as soon as the sensor is taken out - so quick cleaning of the hole, then replacement of the new sensor is necessary.

All booked in for Thursday night - fingers crossed as usual, let's see how we go!!!

As hoped this did the trick and a nice simple fix. Highly recommend for any remaining FTOs out there.
