Tappets issue on a gr

Postby ryanmck14 » Thu Dec 19, 2013 2:26 pm

Ok so i bought a noisy tappy GR.
First stop was to change oil and all filters using motul 5w40
Made it slightly quieter when cold but still not to my liking.

Full set of camskill tappets were purchased and left to soak in oil for 2 weeks before i got time to fit them.

Fitted a week ago along with new plugs etc and result engine was silent rite from the first crack.
All week car was quiet as a mouse. The other morning the car was started and for 3 seconds i got tapping again!!
Same again yesterday tappet noise for about 2-3 seconds then it goes quiet.

However this morn when started from cold it was silent again???
Anyone any idea why?

Thanks

The replacement tappets are not as good as the original ones, but it sounds like you're getting a decent result. I wouldn't think much about it.

Its a bit strange just but i guess its better than it was.
Over half of my originals where seized so it sounded pretty rough.
Guess ill let it go and see how it develops.
Thanks

That is normal operation of hydraulic tappets. The oil drains out of them when the engine is shut down and upon start up they need to refill with oil so tap until full. As long as the noise disappears within a minute or so of start up i wouldn't worry about it. If they are solid lifters then that is another story

Yeah im still getting a tapping noise for 3-4 seconds on start up from cold.
Its a massive improvement over the 15minutes of noise i was getting before though
