Should I Swap

Selling my mirage cos i will have the fto going soon. Just got offered a swap for a 92 1.8turbo 200sx looks clean from pics. To be honest i don't no too much about 200sx never driven one. I'm thinkin bout it because i wouldn't mind a rwd as a second car (bit of messin like). Has anyone got any experince with these? Anything i should watch out for?

I wouldnt, if it was a 300 different story. I know the Z series is the predesecor to the silvia, (old Z series that is, and pre to S13, S14), but no, the 200 was never the ultimate Z, if you're going old school Z class go 180 or 300, I think the 200 isnt the best looking, too many around that think they are lethal weapons and all that. The 180 has real old school looks, the 300 TT manual pushes 300hp, in auto 280, so thats a real story. 200sx is 188hp and not a great looking car in my eyes, but hey, thats just me, if you want it then get it!

Thought the 200sx was just the european name for 180sx? Not too gone on the styling myself. Don't mind the back, if i got it i'd prob go for a s15 front conversion or a mad kit.

the boot door appears to be made from terracotta and it is of slightly dubious taste but I still like it

Hmm, strange, I always thought the 180 was a 1.8, the 200 a 2.0, the 240 a 2.4 and so on. The 200sx is a totally different looking car in my eyes, I dont mind the looks of the 180sx, and thats what I would have considered the car in the pics above, not a 200.

180sx is japanese markets name
200sx is the european name
240sx is the american name
All the same car.

Don't swap for the 180sx cuz the ca18det engine is a complete bucket of crap. Any kind of hard driving and they just give up. They are nearly as unreliable as a fiat punto
Wouldn't touch a ca18 for love nor money cuz it will just break your heart having to spend money on them.

So what the hell am I thinking of??
Its a Nissan, a '90's car, with a longer boot than the 180sx, the back looks a bit like a 300zx, (and no its not one of them, I've seen enough of them to know trust me), they mostly seem to come in a maroon colour. Its bugging me now cause I always called them 200sx!! And I could have sworn it was written on them! Sorry for going OT.

If its the car in the pi. It's an irish/uk model 200sx ca18det engine. Check it over for rust cuz they do rot and make sure the engine is not blowing black or blue smoke, check turbo is spooling up ok, check around the head fand turbo for oil and water leaks cuz the seals and gaskets go on a regular basis. If its just for some fun take it but if its going to be a more than say 3day a week car id leave it where it is cuz they are money pits.

Every car I've owned over the past 5 years has been a money pit in one way or another (largely due to my compulsion for preventative maintenence) - don't let this put you off buying a car if driving enjoyment is your thing.

Ger, the first thing you need to do before you consider this car is hook up with the Irish crew on http://www.sxoc.com , (theres a fairly active SX community over here) and get their input, these guys will be more than happy to point you in the right direction.

I knew I'd find one!! This is my idea of a 200sx, and it says on the middle of the boot, though I couldnt take a pic of it as there was someone in it, '200sx'.


Maybe they call the 180sx a 200sx in some countries, but there is definetaly another type of 200sx.

The Silvia / SX business can be a bit confusing at times with different regional variations and designations et al, stick it into your Wikipedia for more info:

The Nissan Silvia is the name given to the company's long-running line of sport coupes based on the Nissan S platform. Although recent models have shared this chassis with other vehicles produced by Nissan (most notably the European 200SX and North American 240SX in the S13 and S14 generations, and 180SX in the Japanese market), the name Silvia is not interchangeable with the chassis codes.

if it was an sr20 engined one id say deffo do it!! they can take some amount of moddifying!!! 3lads in town have sx/silvias
and they are all savage and very different! s14 with s15 front, 180 with a fully moulded kit in white, black roof/stripped out to the last, and a purple/blue one with a full kit thats completely different to the white one. the s14 is 350ft/lb torque and just under 300bhp!! its a serious beast!!
id prob take the car anyway cause itll prob be easier to flog than a mirage!!


From what i understand about the SX/Silvia thing

in england they are all 200sx, with the 1.8 engine as standard, alot have converted to the SR20 now I understand

in japland there is the:
*180sx with the pop-up lights, sr20 engine, s13 chassis
*S14 with the sr20
*S14a with the funny looking front lights and sr20
*S15 (sr20)
