Poor man's Aston Martin...

Postby colm_mcm » Tue Jun 30, 2009 11:07 am

..... in a seemingly bizzare move it seems likely that Aston Martin will be offering their own version of the Toyota iQ. the blurb goes that many Aston drivers also have a city car as a runabout and Aston Martin wanted to offer it's drivers something in this segment.
The Cygnet, if it makes production will use the Dual VVT-i 1.3 engine already fitted to the iQ, the cars themselves would be built in Japan and converted in the UK. the addition of the Aston bits (grille, bumpers, upgraded interior) will double the price (current Irish price is €15-20k)

the cars are expected to initially only be sold to existing customers, but will be offered to the rest of the world at a later date.

I suspect the reason this car is being introduced isn't because Aston need the money, they don't want to appeal to the average punter, they don't see a huge gap in the market for a premium microcar for €30k.
the reason they're doing this is the reason that Toyota don't sell the Celica, Corolla T Sport or the MR2 anymore, it's all down to "collective emissions" or the average emissions figure across a model range. Everyone's trying to get theirs down, and if Aston sell one low emissions (Toyota iQ = 99g/km Band A) car for every high emissions (Aston DBS = 388g/km Band G) car, they've reduced their collective emissions by around 35%....

Will anyone buy one? who knows!

This isn't a hoax by the way.

I suppose it makes sense to sell two cars to the one customer if you can...

This story was on the front page of the Motors section of the Times yesterday, looks like the real deal.

That really is a crazy premium for a few Aston bits isn't it?

What are the chances we'll see aftermarket Aston "Style" kits for the iQ shortly following its release?

funny you should say that 30k for this car is a bit rich.

Consider these Aston Martin DB9 options prices:

Non standard leather colour: E3600
Non standard paint colour: E3600
Bang & Olufsen sound system E7000
Sports Pack (on a feckin Aston!) E3700
painted calipers E500
mats E500
chrome grille E500
alternative facia trim E700

there's 20k odd of extras there.

Maybe the aston association will have a halo effect on the iQ, which hasn't been the hit we'd hoped it would.

You can also get a watch that doubles as a CL remote, I think that's about £20K too.
