NCT failed.. just. (Now Passed)

Postby TopCat » Mon Jan 26, 2009 11:08 am

Well, had my NCT there on Friday, and other than the Reg plates not being standard (which I should have spotted), it only went down on emissions. And not by a lot – CO was 0.38vol% (limit is 0.3). I had done tried the usual trick of some Redex and keeping the revs high on the way over, but maybe I should have been driving her a bit harder for a couple of days before hand, and perhaps run another couple of tanks of Redex through it? Would that help?

go for a 2 hour drive before hand.

Or jack her up and leave a brick on the accelerator

It was decatted, but put the cat back in a week ago.
All the other figues for the emissions seemed fine
Engine temp - 94Deg
Low Idle - CO 0.02vol% (0.5% limit)
- HC 0
High Idle - Lambda: 1.011 (0.97 to 1.03 range limit)
- CO 0.38vol% (0.3% limit)
- HC 87 ppm (200 ppm limit)

For safey reasons, I would approach this suggestion with caution.

What sort of condition is the cat in, has it only been used for NCT over the past few years?

Depending on the wait in your local centre, stay in the car until its time for the test (second set of keys required), keep the revs up around 2k for a period of time.

What petrol were you using? E5 would be worth a shot.

I have the original plates at home - if you need them.
Pretty petty to fail a car by such a small margin on emissions - I'm sure if they tried a little harder they could have got the emissions down - it is after all a 14 year old car.

You must have been having palpitations looking at those NCT eejits jacking up the FTO with the side skirts on not to mention falling into the rolling road set in the floor?

CJ - Not sure about the cat, though I think it has be out since Shane sold the car, and I'm guessing you didn't have the cat in much shane?
Didn't have E5 in at the time, the local maxol didn't have it, so that might help alright.

MfFTO - yeah, I might grab them plate off you some evening if you can find them, will save a few quid on something that'll only be on the car for a few hours. To be fair to the guy testing, he did seem to spend a long time on the emissions, and told be after that he tried it a couple of times, but couldn't quite get it to pass. Commented on how it was a very tight car for its age.
The rolling road wasn't too tight, but I was very worried about them jacking it up! Had a good inspection of the skirts before I drove off though to make sure there was no cracks, and they were grand. At least now for the retest its just a drive-in drive-out one.

Make sure you have reset the ECU after putting the cat back in. It should re-learn once it's back in, but a total reboot is better.

By the way : reset ECU = disconnect battery for a few minutes.

I'll throw the plates into the jeep and you can pick them up of me some evening.

E5 would def have helped - even a couple of litres of E85 thrown in for good measure or Octane booster like a can of Silkolene - then redden it on the way into the centre - blow those cobwebs outta that cat!

Went back for the retest this morning and it flew through this time. Down from 0.38vol% to 0.02vol%.

What worked for me was putting in 9l of normal maxol petrol (didn't have E5) and 1l E85 bio-ethanol, so roughly E10 as a result. And a good helping of Dipetane fuel treatment (recommended to me by my local motor-factors).

Delighted. :D

Hi all,

Just failed my NCT today with the same problem EMISSIONS - CO0.62%.

Plus my car start acting weird, even before test, it's like it's accelerating on its own, specially when I am braking it's just start jumping. Does anybody know what could it be? I am so freaked.
