Longitudinal is what its called when flywheel at the back, like most old American cars, and pretty much all RWD cars I can think of,
Strangely, some cars like the passat, and a lot of audis mount the engine like this on Front wheel drive cars.
Even more interesting, (?) the fiat cinquecento (1997) had an option of a longitudinal or transverse engine, the longditudinal engine being a 2 cylinder 700cc engine for eastern European market. the transverse ones being the 900cc and 1.1 models we got over here.
