6A12/13 Hybrid

Postby Spetz » Mon Dec 12, 2011 7:29 pm

Hi guys,

Does anyone know anything about building a 2.5L MIVEC?
I am interested in building one but will not start doing so unless I am sure I won't have serious setbacks and it seems that at the least for now the timing belt is a big problem.

Any help is appreciated

How many horses would you hope to get out of this?

How would you go about building an engine? Taking a VR-4 engine for example and adding something to it? Would it be a seriously complicated task?

It would just be a 6A13 bottom end most likely from a VR4 with MIVEC heads rather than the normal DOHC heads.

I do not know how much power it would achieve it depends on way too many variables especially the rpm it will rev to but the crucial thing is there will be a lot more torque.

RPW is the place yes however it is far too expensive and I cannot justify spending more money on an engine than the car is worth.

Aaah, cool, sounds like an interesting thing to be undertaking, would be unique I reckon anyway. You seen it done before anywhere?

No I have not seen it, but of course I know it is possible.
Of course it's not a project I will undertake in the dark hence it may not ever happen

Yes that proves it can be done but how is still a bit of a mystery.

What is the list of parts compatibility? I could not find anything definitive

sadly it was never finished.
I recon if you were going to try something like this id go 3L use the 3L eclipse engine (6G72) with a 6a12 mivec head

Eclipse engine is pretty weak though isn't it? Would a GTO engine be a better 3.0L engine to work with? Or is that the 6G72 as well just with different tuning settings so to speak?

you cant use a GTO engine because the engine is sideways (i dont know the propper name for the layout but ill attach a pic) the engine tends to be longer (or wider if your thinking of the FTO engine)

Actually the 3000GT engine sits east-west as other FWD engines do. I believe there even was an NA FWD version of the 3000GT/GTO.
The first GTO pic you posted is a V8 from a RWD car (looks like an LS1, so I would say most likely a Pontiac GTO which guys in the UK would know as a Vauxhaul, but is actually the Australian Holden Monaro).

The 6G72 can not be mated to the 6A12 heads.
There is a 6G72 MIVEC but the problem is that it is not a direct fit and is much heavier.

That pic you posted is a Pontiac gto dan.

The Mitsubishi gto engine is transverse mounted, same as an fto.

Ahh not so bad.
(OT transverse is FTO style whats it called when the engine is facing N/S?)

And to an earlier post yea the mivec heads do fit

Longitudinal is what its called when flywheel at the back, like most old American cars, and pretty much all RWD cars I can think of,

Strangely, some cars like the passat, and a lot of audis mount the engine like this on Front wheel drive cars.

Even more interesting, (?) the fiat cinquecento (1997) had an option of a longitudinal or transverse engine, the longditudinal engine being a 2 cylinder 700cc engine for eastern European market. the transverse ones being the 900cc and 1.1 models we got over here.

Dan those are not 6A12 MIVEC heads, it is just a 6G72 MIVEC from a JDM Diamante.

Also, the reason the VW group have the longitudinally mounted motor is because they are designed to be quattro/4Motion, but have options for FWD
