Track/tie rod fitting

Postby Mustang » Sun Nov 21, 2004 10:47 pm

I'm looking for some advice on fitting the track / tie rods (not the track rod end -the track rod itself!).
Once you've removed the track rod end, and the protective rubber gaitor, from the track rod, it looks as if you can simply screw the track rod out using a spanner/ wrench, etc. Is it that simple? Will I need a second spanner/wrench to hold the rack 'arm' in place, while I screw out the track rod, with the other wrench, or does the mounting of the rack on the car give it sufficient support? The topic is not very well covered in the workshop manual. Also it describes working on the rack once it's been removed from the car and mounted in a vice (not something I want to do!).
Any help appreciated!
