My First FTO

Postby ShaunD7 » Sat Apr 19, 2014 11:39 pm

Heys Guys,

When looking at these pics please bare in mind, that i got this car for free. It does drive, just not very well lol.

This car will be a long term project and its a mess. But im confident ill get her sorted.
Image

I havent had my mechanic look at it yet, but things ive seen that are wrong in the car are:

1. Air Conditioning is blowing out hot air all the time. After doing some research on this website, I think the Matrix has gone on it.

2. The Car is badly sun burnt which you can see in the pictures.
Image

3. Extremely loud when in Neutral and Park. Revs at about 2500rpm. :/ Only 1000, sitting in traffic with foot on the brake.

4. Not fast at all, definately something wrong there.

5. The car has barely any carpet in it and the front seats are destroyed.
Image
Image

6. Water has been getting into the doors, which has rusted the speakers and mounts, that are now broken from previous owner slamming the doors.
Image

7. Alternator isnt really charging the battery, ive had to unhook everything electrical that i dont need, so i can open the doors while im working on it. Otherwise the open door light drains the battery.

8. Needs a whole new boot.
Image

9. Also has no petrol filler cap. I cant find one either :/
Image

Also was wondering does this intake come as stock? Im not so sure.

So there it is. I know its a mess, but i love it haha. Im looking forward to working on it. I just need some help in bringing her back to her former glory :)

Look forward to hearing what you have all got to say guys.
Thanks. Shaun.

I like! :)

Anyone who restoring an FTO these days should get government grant for doing that

U'll find a lot of help here, just ask whatever ya need to know.

Thats not Your matrix i think its the flap on the blower stuck in hot air position all the time, should be free and easy fix!

That intake isnt stock, and the way it is it might be doing more harm than helping the car.

I would start from cleaning the throttle body and making sure there no one did mess with ISC screw (Idle Speed Control) also maybe someone was at TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) or the
little screw that stop the butterfly plate from jamming in the throttle body.

Your car should hold about 1300-1500 revs when start cold and about 900 when fully warm.

Thanks alot :)

Yeah i was hoping i wouldnt have to take a mortgage out on her haha.

Oh really? i thought it was something worse, because its either hot or scorching :P

Yeah i was thinking that. She sounds rough tbh. So basically, i need to get rid of that intake as soon as possible :P

Ah okay, nice one.

Thanks for the advice.

P.S I wasn't being rude in my last posts, was replying on my phone and it decided to have a fit :P

I have a spare plenum throttle body & stepper motor knocking about If you need one. Its from a GPX so once it fits its all good if you need one. Ill swap it with you as I don't need a working unit.

Oh yeah nice one pal, gonna clean the throttle body and that today and see if it makes a difference, because I'm afraid I'd break something trying to replace it with a working one

I second that!

What is the underbody like? Is there much rust? That would be my main worry.

Holy crap! She certainly needs work!

Looks like you need a donor car mate.

I was buying a red fto from RatherBeDean here in Dublin for €150, but I haven't taken delivery of it (or paid for it), so you're welcome to it, because you clearly need it more than I do.

They are a super car to own, so enjoy it.

Ive had a look, and i dont think its that bad, ive seen alot worse on a 95 :)

Right well, since my last post i've been quite busy with Her. I've done as i was told by all you FTO geniuses. Cleaned out the throttle body and the sensor, it was pretty dirty in there. And when i started her up, the revs were at 1200 :) which was a good sign. But as she got hotter, the revs started climbing again. So any suggestions why thats happening? Climbed to 2500 revs.

Also fixed the A/C, don't ask me how haha got lucky i think :)

And i done this,

I love it, took my time with it and im delighted with the results.

TInting the windows tomorrow. I'm still waiting for my mechanic to come take a look at it. Kinda pissing me off waiting but i have to fix this car the cheapest way possible :(

I went to view this car and there was serious rust issues with it.
Especially under the bonnent on each bulk head.
If spotted at nct, major work would be needed to get it through the nct.

Right well since my last post, I've done some soul searching and I'm moving country at the end of August. The car is now for sale and before I put it on DoneDeal, I thought I'd give you guys first dibs. I know its still in rough shape but someone who is better with cars then I am could get her up to scratch with some TLC. Would even be okay as a doner car. I'll put it up on the For Sale Thread at some stage with more details.

Thanks for all your help
