careful with new xp updates

I've installed the latest 4 critial updates from XP and they ruined my xp install on my desktop pc..

in case you get the same issue - cause apparently it's quite common; here's a solution

I didn't test it yet as I'm too annoyed - but I will tomorrow evening - I need my "need for speed"...

I got the service pack 3 update a couple of days ago, no problems yet...

Use system restore. That's what its there for..

No can do matey - system crashes prior to log in - both in safemode and normal - not even last known good works..

only fix seems to be the recovery console..

Yeah oddly enough the problem doens't happen to everybody, I guess thats why the updates haven't been withdrawn..For a while I thought I'd done something wrong but when I googled the error I found lots of evidence I wasn't alone with the issue.. Ah well, atleast it appears to be fixable - I hate reinstalling..

Had to do this a few years ago, thought I lost all my filescause like that there was no safe mode and wouldnt go anywhere. Had to swop my drives to make the D drive the master and the C the slave and installed windows on the D and moved the stuff over then reinstated the C as master. Took nearly a whole week!

It's stuff like that that makes me hate reinstalling..

Fortunately I have a pretty neat setup now where C: is just windows and my applications that I use alot, and I have an image that's about a month old or so.. reason for not just sticking it on there is that I've just spent 2 weeks configuring Traktor DJ with my new Midi Controller and using traktors built in filescanner to go through my music collection gathering bpm and volume settings, it takes FOREVER..

I would be interested in getting a look at this at some point, many years ago, I used to spend a lot of time tricking about with sequencers, midi controllers and sysex commands before the emergence of MP3....

Would it be possible to remove the update if you booted up with linux?

Doubt it Bernard - you're prolly best off using the recovery console thats on the xp installation cd.

I think that most of the problems are occuring on AMD processors. There are solutions to it if you check the net.

Now is a perfect time to install Ubuntu instead.

You're right - it seems to only occour on AMD systems

You're prolly right on Ubuntu as well - but I was never big into the linux thing..
I've just reinstalled - and stupidly I tried to install SP3 - guess what..

Back to square one! GRRRRR!

Oh I like my Need For Speed games so I guess that rules out Linux for me no?
