RX7 info

Postby miss-enzo » Wed Jun 04, 2008 8:25 pm

right my other half has decided he wants one of these....a mate of his is sellin a mint one (92) for about 9k.... 60/80k kms left on rebiuld (cant remember which!)

Just want to know does neone know much about these,

whats the story with the rebuild??? How much do they cost for a proper one?
What kinda mpg do ya get?
Are they a generally expensive to run??
are they one of these cars that always have little issue?

As you can prob tell im not 100% thrilled he wants this cause i think:
a) its a fair bit of money for a 92.... dunno what thye usually make
b) its a bit off puttin with the whole "you will need a rebuild" thing

any info on the cars is much appreciated!

CJ,
Is the man to ask. I believe a rebuild is ~€2600. Fuel consumption is massive.

Super looking example of a fabulous car. The biggest problem I would have with the Rexs is that they really need to be minded and are expensive to run. Otherwise I'd probably be driving one over the 350Z.

www.irishrotary.com has all the info you need.

Things to be mindful of:

Buy with your head, not your heart!
Cost of ownership (servicing, fuel consumption)
Demand an engine compression test before buying
Ideally, needs to be run exclusively on E5.

The 3rd gen RX-7 is fantastic drivers car, especially with subtle mods. I really miss my FD, one of the best cars I've owned in terms of pure driving enjoyment. Pics of my old FD here:

Indeed they do - I was averaging 11MPG around town, it was worth it though :smt045

It was my second car so I went with XS Direct (4k excess) @ 800 euro. IIRC, it wasn't all that different from the FTO.

Waiting for Mark to get in on this thread...

OK, my thoughts after 3 weeks of ownership! I've a 99 Type R. I went for the later model as they had more bhp, revised turbos and cooling and a 16 bit ECU over an 8bit plus a few other things.
It just depends what you want to do with it. It's no where near as practical as the FTO and you have to stop before going over any speed bumps, cabin gets hot from transmission heat and yes fuel economy is  - best not to think about it. Other than that, everyone looks at you, kids go WOW and it's got savage performance and can be modded no end. Another potential modern classic in the making, Lots of people drive up your ar$e just to see what it is. It's good to have something different though. I'd have gone for a Z only couldn't justify 1500 plus euros road tax, Rex is in at 1.8l and is emission exempt and we all know how difficult the FTO was with emissions! Other than that about 5k for a rebuild!

ok, its been said enough, so won't repeat it. but... my mate has a 99 one and they absolutely GUZZLE fuel. He must see 15mpg on a good day. It sounds amazing and drives like a rocket though.

Precisely - if it drives like a rocket (and has a turbo) then chances are it will drink like one too.

Have to say though Mark that Tax difference between the Zed and the Rex would easily be recouped on running costs and fuel efficiency (my Zed nevers goes lower than 25mpg). Add in Micra type reliability and low servicing costs and the only expensive bit of the 350Z is the initial purchase price. I reckon the Zed is cheaper to run than an FTO - particularly because its a newer model that doesn't need as much wearing items addressed.

I'd agree to a point, lets say 1000 euro difference in tax, for the RX7 it's mainly plugs and oil changes and of course petrol. A lot of people only use it as a weekend car, it just depends on what and how much it will be used. But I would hope that the Z would work out a lot cheaper in the long run. Fuel econ seems amazing for a 3.6. Cheaper than an FTO? Now, I'm curious! Don't get me wrong I know the issues asociated with an RX7 and if you get a good one it might not be as bad as people think, touch wood..

In real terms vis a vis age. You'd need to be comparing the RX7 with a 300zx. Otherwise these cars are of a different vintage and price range and don't really bare comparision
Possibly a late model '02 rx7 (v expensive) compared with a 03 zed.

aye thats the one!! he got his year quote for quinn in the post today,...... only 400yoyo more than what he was payin on a (1.6 doh vtec) Vti civic!

400 for a 2.6 twin turbo (thats what the paperwork says) than a 1.6 vtec civic!

what a joke!

we took the car to cork at the wkend and used just under a half a tank for the return trip (from dungarvan) which isnt too bad cause id prob get a bout the same in the FTO cause there are some very nice "mivec friendly" areas on that road!
